There are three types of knitting needle:-
This type of needle is generally used for flat knitting, i.e. knitting on one side (right side) and knitting on the other side (wrong side). They come in many standard lengths, i.e. 7", 10", 13" and 14". Circular Needles These comprise a pair of straight knitting needle tips joined by a flexible cable. They are used to "knit in the round" without turning your work, thus creating a seamless tube. Circular needles can also be used in the same way as straight needles, useful for very wide pieces of knitting. They are available in many different lengths, i.e. 24", 29", 36" and even 60". Double Pointed Needles These have a point at each end and are usually sold in sets of four needles. They are used in rounds in the same way as a circular needle when there are not enough stitches to stretch around the circumference of a circular needle, i.e. when knitting sleeve cuffs, socks etc. They come in length of 7" and 10".
The needle size does not always appear on the needles themselves, so it is wise to invest in a small needle gauge to help determine the size of your needles. Experiment with needles made from different materials until you find what suits you best. • Wooden and some plastic needles have a slight grip, thus giving you more control. • Nickel-plated brass needles are smooth and the fastest type of needle to knit with, ideal for the more experienced knitter. __________________________________________ Crochet Hooks Crochet hooks are available in a large range of sizes (denoted by number and/or letter) and are available in basically the same materials and knitting needles. A medium size hook (i.e. 5mm) is a handy addition to any work basket.
