Proper placement of buttons and well made buttonholes prevents gapping. Women: Buttons normally go on the left front of the garment.
Men: Buttons normally go on the right front of the garment. Start by positioning the top and bottom buttons on your knitted band. Generally speaking the top button is normally placed ½ inch to 1 inch from the top of the garment (when knitting a more delicate garment you may wish to place the top button closer to the neck). The bottom button should be placed ½ inch to 1 inch from the bottom edge. When working a jacket type garment you may want to position the bottom button a little higher up to allow freedom of movement.
Once you are happy with the position of the top and bottom buttons, count the rows (or stitches for a picked up band) between these buttons to determine where to place the others evenly between them. Useful Tips When placing buttons for a vertical buttonhole, centre both the button and the buttonhole along the centre lines of the front bands. Position your button/buttonhole pair so that the centre of the button lines up with the top corner of the buttonhole. This will prevent the button from working free. When placing buttons for a horizontal buttonhole, position the button away from the centre, towards the outer edge of the band. This will ensure that when your garment is buttoned up, the bands will remain aligned one on top of the other.
